Two Advantages to Working with Denver Acupuncture & Chinese Medical Specialists for Infertility Issues

Infertility is a problem among 10% of the female population within the United States. Despite its prevalence however, the problem can be overcome by undergoing the requisite treatment regimen. And in recent years many medical professionals have become proponents of the use of acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine as a means to resolve infertility and improve the likelihood of couples having healthy children. Within this blog we’ll focus on two unique ways in which the Denver, Colorado based wellness clinic, Healing Traditions Oriental Medicine and Wellness, utilizes Oriental-Chinese Medicine (Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine) to treat their patients’ infertility issues.

  1. Balancing Hormones

Acupuncture has been shown in studies to help promote the release  of beneficial chemicals in the brain that help to balance hormones within the body. Specifically, Acupuncture is very good at calming down the body’s “Flight or Fight Mechanisms”, other wise known as the body’s “Sympathetic Nervous System”.  This is the system that is at play during times of stress.  The body adopts this “Flight or Fight State” when it perceives it is in a state of stress or danger.  These stresses can be due to traditional trauma or due to other things like: stress at work, stress at home or in personal relationships, over-exercising, not enough sleep, death of a loved one, traveling and flying, deadlines, etc....  A hormone that is released during times of stress is Cortisol.  Cortisol is released by the adrenal glands, which are small glands that lay on top of our kidneys, during times of stress and cortisol is necessary to help see the body through the stressor and maintain survival.  Our body’s however, are not meant to be in the ‘Stressed State”, aka, “The Flight or Fight” state all the time.  Unfortunately, due to the fast past lives of so many in today’s culture, we are finding more and more people living in the ‘Stressed State”, aka, “The Flight or Fight” state more often than not.  This ultimately, can lead to serious imbalances within the hormonal or endocrine system of the body, therefore having the very real potential of effecting people’s fertility potential.  When our body’s are in a stressed state more often than not, then this means that cortisol is also being released in higher amounts and for longer periods of time.  Cortisol in excess can have negative impacts on both Thyroid function and sex hormone function.  In excess, cortisol will inhibit the release of appropriate amounts of both Thyroid hormone and the hormones that influence ovarian follicle maturation and development and ovulation and therefore, the appropriate amounts of estrogen and progesterone in females, as well as, Sperm maturation and development and therefore, testosterone in males.  Both Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine are able to help calm these stressed states, as well as, help promote the healthy maturation and development of both Ovarian follicles and eggs in the female, and sperm in the males, therefore also helping to encourage healthy hormonal balance.  This balanced hormonal state then promotes the requisite environment for conception to occur and  improves the overall chances of a viable pregnancy and healthy child.

Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine can also assist in fallopian tube motility, as well as, increasing blood flow to the reproductive organs such as the ovaries and uterus in females, and the testes in males, therefore representing another avenue for improving potential for fertility and pregnancy.  In addition, Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine are now also commonly used as  viable treatment options for couples that are suffering from infertility related issues such as PCOS and endometriosis.

  2. As an Adjunct Treatment alongside IVF

Couples that are undergoing IVF-ICSI treatment can benefit substantially from the addition of acupuncture as a supportive and adjunct treatment. IVF-ICSI is used in cases such as: fallopian tube blockage, low sperm count, abnormal cervical factors, immunologic factors affecting either partner, infertility after a tubal surgery, infertility after treatment for endometriosis, and for un-explained infertility.

However, despite how amazing this technology is, only about a third of people on average undergoing IVF will get pregnant. If you are over 40 your chances can be much lower than that. In addition, even if you get pregnant, you have a 20% or higher chance of miscarrying.

This is where acupuncture can be extremely helpful. For thousands of years acupuncture has been used to treat reproductive disorders and to help prevent miscarriages. Now, modern medicine is finding that acupuncture can indeed improve IVF outcomes (increasing pregnancy rates) and simultaneously decreasing miscarriage rates and helping to maintain a healthy pregnancy.

Studies have demonstrated that acupuncture can greatly increase IVF pregnancy rates. Women who receive properly timed and properly performed acupuncture have demonstrated up to a 106% increase in ongoing pregnancies. Studies have also demonstrated a number of other benefits including substantial increases in implantation rates and increases in both uterine and ovarian blood flow. [1] [2] [3]

Acupuncture also has a significant impact on "poor responders", whose bodies do not respond well to standard IVF medications or protocols. In one study, poor responders that had acupuncture achieved the same pregnancy rates as normal responders. [4]
