Recent medical developments have highlighted the benefits of utilizing Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine for the treatment of common Obstetric and Gynecological complaints.  This ancient, yet, “time proven” Medical Modality is often considered superior in terms of its efficacy than some modern medical treatments. Within this blog we’ll focus on two very common OBGYN conditions in which the Denver OBGYN specialists at Healing Traditions Oriental Medicine and Wellness address in their patients.

  1. Relieving Menstrual Cramps

A recent study conducted in Korea that encompassed the results from close to 3,000 women has shown that acupuncture treatment, when conducted professionally can do more to relieve the pain of menstrual cramps than conventional medicine. The study showed that the use of acupuncture can help to stimulate the release of endorphins and serotonin within the central nervous system which in turn can help the body deal with pain.

In Chinese Medicine, there is a saying that reads: “Where there if ‘free flow’, there is no pain.  Where there is ‘No free flow’, there is pain.”  Therefore, Chinese Medicine, sees “pain” in the body as a “lack of free flow” in both its blood circulation and the energy behind that blood circulation.  Chinese Medicine views menstrual cramps and conditions such as endometriosis as forms of “stagnation” in the body.  Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Therapy serve to improve blood circulation, as well as transform and breakdown pathological fluid accumulations that can manifest as ovarian cysts, and or lesions found in and outside the reproductive organs as is seen in Endometriosis.  Therefore, Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal therapy have the ability to address and relieve stagnation, thus ensuring a “free flowing” circulation of both blood and energy in the body and specifically in the reproductive organs when being addressed directly.
  2. Reducing Depression Symptoms During Pregnancy

Women who are pregnant and become depressed may be able to reduce the level of depression suffered by undergoing acupuncture treatment. This is according to findings published in Obstetrics and Gynecology magazine in 2011. The Stanford University study included 150 pregnant women who met the standard for depression according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The study showed that women who underwent a course of acupuncture treatment had a higher rate of reduced depression symptoms than those within a separate control group within the study who did not undergo acupuncture treatment.

The continuing studies into the effectiveness of acupuncture and other ancient medical treatments, such as Chinese Herbal Medicine are showing the modern medical world that there is a lot to be learned from previous generations.
